Home Composting for Beginners: A Simple Guide
What composting actually is
Composting is simply letting organic waste — vegetable peels, fruit scraps, garden trimmings — break down naturally into a rich, dark, soil-like material that feeds your plants. It’s nature’s recycling, and it’s easier than most people think.
Greens and browns: the basic balance
Good compost needs a balance of two things:
- Greens (nitrogen): vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, fresh garden waste.
- Browns (carbon): dry leaves, shredded paper, cardboard, sawdust.
Aim for a mix of both — too many greens turn it smelly and wet; too many browns slow it down.
What to add — and what to avoid
Add: vegetable and fruit peels, tea leaves, coffee grounds, eggshells, dry leaves, paper.
Avoid: meat, fish, dairy, oily food, and diseased plants — these cause odour and attract pests.
Keep it moist and aerated
Your compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge — damp, not soggy. Turn or mix it every few days to let air in. This keeps it odour-free and speeds up the process.
How long does it take?
In India’s warm climate, compost can be ready in a few weeks to a couple of months. You’ll know it’s done when it’s dark, crumbly, and smells earthy — not rotten.
Use your compost
Mix the finished compost into potting soil or sprinkle it around your plants. Your garden gets free, natural nourishment, and your kitchen waste never reaches a landfill.
